The only widely available vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) is the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine. First administered to humans in 1921, it is prepared from a live, weakened strain of Mycobacterium bovis (bovine tuberculosis), which is genetically similar enough to human TB to prompt an immune response. While it is a standard childhood immunization in many countries with high TB prevalence, it is handled very differently in nations where the disease is less common
