The PPSV23 vaccine (brand name Pneumovax 23) is an inactivated vaccine used to prevent serious infections caused by 23 distinct serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. It is highly effective at protecting against invasive pneumococcal disease—such as meningitis and bacteremia (bloodstream infections)—as well as bacterial pneumonia. Because it consists of purified capsular polysaccharides (sugars from the outside of the bacteria) rather than live germs, it cannot cause pneumococcal disease. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
