Lactulose is a synthetic sugar solution used as an osmotic laxative to treat chronic constipation and to reduce blood ammonia levels in people with severe liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy). It works by drawing water into the bowel or trapping ammonia in the gut to be passed through stool.
